Making the Eye stalk

The eye stalk is one of the most impressive parts of an NSD. It is also surprisingly quick to make using the original EMA plastic parts. I had the eyeball and plunger done in a couple of hours. Unfortunately the parts are surprisingly expensive as well, about $250 just to make the eye stalk and plunger.

Here is the finished eyeball ready for paint.

The eyeball is mounted on a stick that moves on a pivot disk. The end of the stick protrudes into the dome to allow the operator to move it up and down.

The eye stalk is detailed with six disks made from EMA parts that have been scuffed up with sandpaper on a lathe to make them stand out. The eye disks are spaced by pieces of aluminum tube cut to size.

Moving the Dome and Eye stalk.

The dome rotates on an lazy susan bearing with the pivot point for the eye stalk attached. Sorry no pictures at the moment.

The light Cages

The light cages protect the now impossible to replace 'Moflash' lenses. These lenses used to be made in a variety of colors for use in warning beacons and the lights. But a change to the injection mold means that new parts are a different size and no new parts will become available in the future unless someone decides to spend $10,000 on a new mold.
